“After a few moments of the initially reserved sounds, the first song “III” explodes into a brute thunderstorm of sound, only to return to softer melodies after a short time. The previously released song “Shelter” is accompanied by a powerful riff and in between it rises into huge choruses. Often electronic loops can be heard on the EP, which mostly stand in the background, but always dare to come to the fore. So “Plain” starts with an electronic intro before the guitar-heavy main part. The nice thing about “Shelter” is that at no point do you notice that it’s “just” a duo. Nothing is missing. Quite the opposite. The interlocking playing of drums and guitar as well as the recurring reduction to a few instruments, which nevertheless offer a comprehensive sound, distinguish Banana Roadkill.
The dark “Hollow” sums up the EP well and after only 17 minutes “Shelter” is already over. Five captivating songs that create a thrilling atmosphere and never let you go even after the last note of the record was played. All in all “Shelter” is a great record, with surprising twists and gruelling melodies that you shouldn’t miss! (minutenmusik.de)
